1359Beatriz of Castile, Queen consort of Portugal by her marriage to Alfonso IV of Portugal, dies in Lisbon. Their arranged marriage ended in love. She bore the king 7 children. Much loved by the Portuguese.
1533Carlos I of Spain appoints Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés as the first official chronicler of the Indies.
1881Pablo Picasso, perhaps the most influential artist of the 20th century, was born in Malaga. Under the influence of Cézanne and in the company of Georges Braque, Picasso initiated Cubism.
