1548Alonso de Mendoza founds the town of Nuestra Señora de La Paz (Bolivia) in the province of Charcas in the viceroyalty of Peru.
1572The Spanish tercios (2700 men), under the command of Cristóbal de Mondragón, forded the Scheldt and won an important victory at Goes against the Anglo-Dutch army (8000 men).
1740Emperor Charles VI dies leving his daughter Maria Theresa as heir to his patrimonial estates in accordance with the Pragmatic Decree of 1713, which triggered the so-called War of the Austrian Succession against Bavaria, Prussia and the two Bourbon Crowns.
2011Terrorist group ETA announces the "definitive cessation" of the armed struggle after 43 years of terrorist violence during which 829 people have been murdered. ETA describes this as a "clear, firm and definitive" commitment.
