1126Averroes (d. 1198), Andalusian physician, master of philosophy, mathematics, astronomy and medicine, is born.
1182The Seville Mosque is inaugurated in Spain, work on which had begun ten years earlier.
1204Enrique I (d. 1217), Castilian king, is born.
1527Abraham Ortelius (d. 1598) is born. He was a Flemish geographer and cartographer in the service of Felipe II.
1573Captain Juan de Garay leaves Asunción (present-day Paraguay) with an expedition comprising 9 Spaniards and 75 "young men born in these lands". The following year he founded Santa Fe and six years later Buenos Aires.
1578Felipe III (d. 1621), King of Spain and Portugal between 1598 and 1621, is born.
1748Spaniard Rafael de Aguiar founds San Nicolás de los Arroyos in the north of the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina).
1815Argentine War of Independence: The battle of Puesto del Marqués takes place in the province of Jujuy.
1850In Chile, the liberal Francisco Bilbao and other intellectuals found the Sociedad de la Igualdad (Equality Society).
1865Rafael Carrera y Turcios, politician and president of Guatemala, dies.
1868In Guanabacoa (Cuba), the newspaper El Álbum publishes José Martí's first verses, "A Micaela", dedicated to the wife of Rafael María de Mendive.
1872Ten Years' War: In Cayo Redondo (Cuba), Vicente García's troops fight against Spanish troops.
1890The International Union of American States (later Organisation of American States) is founded in the United States.
1915Luis Coloma, Spanish Jesuit, writer, journalist, and  creator of the legendary character Ratoncito Pérez (Spanish Tooth Fairy), dies.
1936The theatre group "La Barraca", created by Federico García Lorca, gives its last performance in Barcelona (Spain).
1958In the jungle of the Sierra Maestra (Cuba's easternmost province), Fidel Castro makes his first speech on Radio Rebelde.
