1549Ana of Austria, fourth wife of Felipe II and queen consort of Spain and Portugal from 1570 until her death from a flu epidemic in 1580, is born in Cigales (Valladolid).
1549Pedro de Ursúa and Ortún Velázquez found the city of Pamplona, Colombia, in the viceroyalty of Peru, under the name of Pamplona de Indias.
1569The village of Los Santos (Panama) is founded by Spaniards, Creoles and mestizos from Nata de los Caballeros.
1606Manuel del Castillo y Padilla, judge of the Royal Audiencia of Charcas del Alto Perú, founded the city of Oruro (Bolivia).
1661Felipe Prospero, son of Felipe IV and his second wife and niece Mariana of Austria, dies.

1993Severo Ochoa de Albornoz, Spanish scientist and, from 1956, naturalised US citizen, dies. Winner of the 1959 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for a series of studies that led to the synthesis of ribonucleic acid, RNA.
