1700Pope Innocent XII dies.
1806Murcian explorer Facundo Melgares, in command of 500 Spanish soldiers and 100 natives, ordered the construction of a fort known as La Garita, in Colorado, at the foot of a small volcano that still retains its name today.

1877Julio Casares, author of a prestigious ideological dictionary, is born in Granada.
