1515Juan Díaz de Solís, sets sail from Sanlúcar de Barrameda in order to obtain a passage between the Atlantic and the Pacific that would lead to the Moluccas (spice islands).
1573The siege of Alkmaar (Netherlands) by Fadrique's Spanish troops is lifted. It is the first time a city in the United Provinces resists a Spanish siege.
