1494The great expedition of Columbus' second voyage reached the Lesser Antilles, sighted the island of Dominica and landed on the Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe.
1591Juan Fernández de León founds the city of Guanare in the province of Venezuela, with the name of Espíritu Santo del Valle de Guanaguanare.
1592The city of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, is founded in New Spain under the name of San Luis Mesquitique.
1736José Patiño, Spanish statesman who held several posts in the reign of Felipe V, including Intendant General of the Navy, dies.
1893The steamship "Cabo Machichaco" blows up in Santander harbour with 51 tons od dynamite in her hold, killing 590 people and injuring more than 2000.
