1109Alfonso VI of León (b. 1040) dies.
1431Reconquista: In Atarfe (Granada, the battle of the Higueruela, in which Juan II of Castile defeats the Nasrid armies of Granada led by King Muhammed IX, takes place.
1874Bolivia and Chile sign the second boundary treaty, which replaces the one signed in 1866. Chile renounces the territories in the area between the 24th and 25th parallels. In exchange, the Bolivian government agrees not to increase taxes on saltpetre for the next 25 years, i.e. until 1899.
1898Spanish-American War: Battle of El Caney (Cuba) in which 550 Spaniards stopped the advance of more than 6000 Americans for half a day.
1966The Spanish Museum of Abstract Art is inaugurated in Cuenca.
1974President Juan Domingo Perón (b. 1895) dies in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and is succeeded by Vice-President María Estela Martínez de Perón, his widow.
