1570French pirate Jacques de Sores and his men murder 40 Jesuit missionaries, known as the martyrs of Tazacorte (Spain), 32 Portuguese and 8 Spaniards, who were on their way to Brazil.
1689The city of Santa Clara (Cuba) was founded.
1738The Royal Academy of Medicine is founded in Madrid.
1799French Captain Pierre-François Bouchard finds the Rosetta Stone in Egypt.
1834Tthe existence of the Tribunal of the Holy Inquisition is officially ended by decree of Queen Isabel II of Spain.
1835First Carlist War: the battle of Mendigorría takes place, from which the liberals emerge victoriously.
1867Benito Juárez enters Mexico City in triumph after the Liberal victory in the Second French Intervention.
1885Spanish writer Rosalía de Castro (b. 1837) dies in Padrón.
1898Spanish-American War: The city of Santiago, in Cuba, capitulates to the US troops.

2000José María Martín Carpena (50 years old), PP councillor in Málaga, was shot and killed by ETA member Igor Solana Matarrán while walking with his wife and daughter. Lest we forget!
